Is It Really Possible to Know That I Have Eternal Life?
Winter 2013
Yes, it is! As unbelievable as it may seem, the Bible tells us that everybody who believes in Jesus can know that he or she has eternal life. For example, 1 John 5:13 says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.” If you believe in Jesus, that He died for your sin and rose again, then you can be assured of your salvation (1 Corinthians 15:1-6).
Of course, believing in Jesus doesn’t mean you will never have doubts. All of us struggle with doubt from time to time. Doubt, though, is not incompatible with faith in Jesus Christ. In Mark 9:24, the father of a demon-possessed child confesses to Jesus that he believes and doubts at the same time: “I believe; help my unbelief!” Doubt is an opportunity for us to rely upon the Holy Spirit (who lives within every Christian) and to ask Him to strengthen our faith.
When we doubt, we can return to the truth about Jesus and remind ourselves that once we have believed in Him, nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:31-39). In that way, we can be reassured over and over again that God loves us and has given us eternal life through Jesus.
